ELIZABETH HOAK-DOERING
Biographical Notes
Elizabeth Hoak-Doering holds a BA in Anthropology from Amherst College (USA), an MAed. from the University of the Arts (Philadelphia), and an MFA in Sculpture from Boston University. She is a native of Philadelphia. In 1996 she received a Fulbright Scholarship to study sculpture and archaeology in Cyprus, her current place of residence. Her trans-disciplinary projects are realized in multiple formats: in drawing, multimedia, sonic and kinetic installation and also published academic papers. While her work focuses on Cyprus, it also draws from her experience among the Navajo (2008), in Armenia (2002 and 2007), and with the Samburu of Kenya (1986-87). In 2011 she was selected to co-represent the Republic of Cyprus in the 54th Venice Biennale of Art. Solo exhibitions include the Pharos Centre for Contemporary Art (2009), and the Nicosia Municipal Art Centre in Association with the Pierides Foundation (2009); and group exhibitions such as Chypre: L’Art au Présent (Paris, 2010); out of OSTRALE’10 (Dresden 2010), Suspended Spaces (Amiens, 2010). Ms. Doering’s writing is published in the International Feminist Journal of Politics (2010), the Cyprus Review (2009); two other works are forthcoming in 2012. She is currently working on the subject of the Suez Canal and Cypriot heritage, and on visual-acoustic approaches to framing and distance in recordings. She is Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Nicosia.
