underground utopia 2005

Elizabeth Hoak-Doering - underground utopia

underground utopia is a collaged set of rubbings from sewer covers located inside the UN Buffer Zone in Cyprus.

The blue line frames the institutional presence of the UN, and also the flow of water beneath the divided city of Nicosia; a flow that is shared between the two sides.

Even though the Buffer Zone is politically neutral, the lettering, words and names cast into the sewer covers expose [historical] territorial claims: British, Greek Cypriot, and Turkish/Turkish Cypriot.

The sewer cover rubbings suggest a shared, ordinary, and basic level of humanity that is easily overlooked amidst efforts to define ourselves politically, and even individually.
